Fayemi defends campaign against rigging

April 10, 2009

From Odunayo Ogunmola, Ado-Ekiti

Ekiti State Action Congress (AC) governorship candidate Dr Kayode Fayemi yesterday explained why there are calls for attacks on poll riggers.

He said those offended by the people\'s plan to curb rigging fear if they had no plans to rig election.

Fayemi spoke on Progress FM radio in Ado-Ekiti while responding to criticisms by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against the opposition to challenge poll riggers in the rescheduled election.

He said it was not the decision of the AC as a party" to carry out were yesterday \'Rig and Roast\' action against riggers, but that of the voters, who have formed themselves into vigilance groups to protect their votes.

He said President Umaru Yar\'Adua ought to have apologised to the people for not doing anything for them rather than canvassing votes for the PDP\'s candidate, Mr. Segun Oni.

Fayemi said the people had nothing to show for Oni\'s tenure, expect badly implemented projects, such as solar light and roads, among others.

He noted that of the 27 projects awarded by Oni, 17 were cancelled, adding that even those under construction were in a bad shape.

"The difference between us is that while we have concern for the masses of our people, they are always busy filling their pockets," he added.

On the defection of PDP members to the AC, Fayemi said it was the first time he was witnessing politicians in the ruling party defecting to the opposition.

"The focus of our administration is to meet the people\'s needs. These include provision of light, education, agricultural production, health and other areas that will make life meaningful for our people," Fayemi said.
