Six aides of Ekiti State Action Congress (AC) governorship candidate Kayode Fayemi and a journalist have sought police protection over alleged threats to their lives.

They alleged in a petition to the state police command that their lives are being threatened by some members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

In a January 26 letter from the law firm of Falana and Falana to the Commissioner of Police, they alleged that some PDP loyalists at the state High Court complex, venue of the Election Petitions Tribunal, threatened to kill them if they continued to attend the sittings of the tribunal.

The petitioners are the state AC Deputy Chairman, Chief Dele Falusi, four officials of Fayemi Campaign Organisation, Hakeem Jamiu, Seun Odewale, Gbenga Agbeyo, Deji Adesokan, a witness, Adeyinka Adumati and the Director of News and Current Affairs of Adaba 88.9 FM, Akure, Jide Ogunluyi.

The letter, signed by their lawyer, Ibrahim Olanrewaju, said some PDP members always threatened them whenever they were at the tribunal.

They recalled that Ogunluyi, who covers the tribunal for his organisation, was attacked in November last year. His assailant nearly strangulated him with his tie.

The same person with another PDP sympathiser allegedly attacked Jamiu at the tribunal premises on December 16 last year.

The petitioners claimed that Odewale, a technical consultant, was attacked in an attempt to damage the projector he used to screen images connected with the last rerun election at the tribunal.

The petitioners also alleged that all of them had been attacked in one way of the other, urging police to ensure their safety.
